The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne and Saint John the Baptist, sometimes called the Burlington House Cartoon, is a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci. The drawing is in charcoal and black and white chalk, on eight sheets of paper that are glued together. Because of its large size and format the drawing is presumed to be a cartoon for a painting. The cartoon of Saint Anne, the Virgin and the Child Jesus is part of the Christian iconographic theme of the "Trinitarian Saint Anne", in which the Child Jesus, his mother Mary and his grandmother Anne are depicted together. [5] The painting of The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne was Leonardo da Vinci's first work to depict the subject. [6]
The idea of depicting the Mother of God with her own mother was therefore particularly close to Leonardo's heart, because he, in a sense, had "two mothers" himself. In both versions of the composition (the Louvre painting and the London cartoon) it is hard to discern whether Saint Anne is a full generation older than Mary.

The Christ Child and the Infant John the Baptist with a Shell or The Holy Children with a Shell (Spanish - Los Niños de la concha) is a 1670-1675 oil on canvas painting by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, now in the Prado Museum in Madrid. One of the artist's most popular works, it was widely reproduced in prints and on plates. [1]

The subject, the birth of Mary, is shown in a secondary location in the lower part of the painting. It includes St. Anne's bed, the midwives with the daughter. St. Joachim, having been out for provisions, returns with a bundle slung from his staff across his shoulder. [1]
