Wilmer–Hutchins Independent School District (WHISD) was a school district in southern Dallas County, Texas serving the cities of Wilmer and Hutchins, a portion of Dallas (the district was last headquartered at 3820 East Illinois Avenue in Dallas [1]), and a small portion of Lancaster. The district served urban, suburban, and rural areas. [2]
Colorado Independent School District is a public school district based in Colorado City, Texas . Located in Mitchell County , a very small portion of the district extends into Scurry County . In 2009, the school district was rated " academically acceptable " by the Texas Education Agency .
Wilmer-Hutchins Elementary School is located in South Dallas and serves, in addition to sections of Dallas, almost all of Hutchins, and a small section of Lancaster. [24] [122] Previously it also included a portion of Wilmer. [24] [123] The school opened in 2011 to serve areas of the former Wilmer-Hutchins Independent School District. [31]
In 2011, the district re-opened Wilmer Hutchins and converted A. Maceo Smith into a technology magnet. [9] Some former WHISD zones covered by South Oak Cliff were rezoned to Wilmer-Hutchins. [10] [11] South Oak Cliff absorbed parts of the former A. Maceo Smith boundary. [12] [13] By 2016 the district agreed to remodel the SOC building.
During the 2012-2013 school year, the district had 560 students (150 in the high school), up from 475 in the 2011-12 year; none of the students were FLDS Church members. The Arts Magnet became a prototype for magnet schools across the country. The repurposing was part of the federal court desegregation orders that created the magnet school system in Dallas ISD (Tasby v. Estes [7]). Paul Baker was selected by Superintendent Estes as founding director of the school.
Colorado High School is a public high school located in Colorado City, Texas, United States and classified as a 3A school by the UIL. It is part of the Colorado Independent School District. The high school serves students from areas in Mitchell County. Generally students from the area come from Colorado City or the surrounding area.
When the Texas Education Agency asked for neighboring districts to take over the troubled Wilmer-Hutchins Independent School District in mid-2005, Lancaster ISD was given the first offer. Lancaster school board trustees rejected the proposal and the Dallas Independent School District eventually agreed to educate Wilmer-Hutchins students. [8]
