Jun 3, 2012. #5. Re: IMR 4895 Loads for .308. At a hundred yards, the 41.5 gr. IMR 4895 load with a 168 SMK in the MWS is a lot more accurate than I am. (brass or primers don't seem to make any difference) Shooting 300+ you might need a hotter load though. There's a thread of go-to .308 loads going on now.
Fort Garland, CO. www.wittmachine.net. May 28, 2009. #2. May 28, 2009. #2. Re: .308, 168 gr match load recipe LC cases, CCI BR2 Primers, 41.250gr IMR 4895, 168gn SMK. 1/2 MOA in an upgraded M1A Well below Max Load, but Use at your own risk - or start out with a little less powder and work up. H.
73. North East Alabama. Dec 22, 2009. #8. Re: .308 favorite accuracy loads. To get the same results I get with 44.8 of Varget I use 43.6 of the RL15, produces identical speeds and accuracy out of my Savage 10FCP with the 175 SMK's, Lapua brass, with Federal 210M primers, runs around 2710fps over my Chrony.
My load for my AR Krieger 1-10 18" 308 obermeyer chamber is: 185gr Berger Juggernaut. 43.3gr Varget. CCi Br2 primer. Lapua Brass. Coal 2.8145. The rifle loves these, most groups are clover or better if I haven't been drinking redbull! As always, work up for Safety! .
Last time I determined a node around 42.0 grains of Varget when I was loading three rounds in .5gr increments. Today I was able to load up 5 rounds each of charge weights from 41.8 to 42.4 (.2 increments) today to further test accuracy and velocity in the 178 ELD-X's. Velocity was measured using a Labradar.
Michigan. Sep 9, 2013. #2. varget and 308 loads. Look in the .308 loads section. They're all there. 42-45 is the spread, depending on chamber and seating depth. If your rifle doesn't shoot well with any reasonable Varget load you have a gun problem. Personally, I would also try 4895 and BLC (2) in a 20" barrel, but Varget will work fine.
Delaware. Dec 17, 2021. #1. Working up load data for RPR 308 using CFE223 powder in case anyone’s interested. First pic is SMK 168, my reference standard. Second pic is Hornady ELD-M, 168 using CFE223, 46.5.46.6 grains, Fed brass, WIN LR primers, COL 2.800” nominal. With exception of probably flier, I’m reasonably happy.
You can avoid the meplat problem altogether by using the cartridge base to ogive length; I don't load anything in centerfire rifle using COL. My .308 is a Remington 5R with the traditional long throat so crowding the lands isn't an option. I use a 2.225 base to ogive length with 40.5 gr of IMR 4064; it's my hero load.
That seems to be the universal load for heavy barreled .308's shooting 168 & 175gr pills. It hasn't failed me yet. If you wanna have some real fun, you should try the Berger 210 VLD's with 39.1gr of Varget if you have the right twist rate (1:10 or 1:11.25"). Load at your own risk, that is Berger's max recommended load for the 210's in the .308.
The only load data they have for Hodgdon superformance is listed. Its not the same powder used in Hornady superformance ammo, every Hornady superformance ammo has its own special blend base off the superformance powder. So with that in mind, it may work with 308 win. however their is no safe load data for 308 win unless stated in from Hodgdon.
