The college was established in 1950 as Carlsbad Instructional Center. It later became a branch campus of New Mexico State University named New Mexico State University Carlsbad. [ 1 ] In July 2021, the college became an independent public institution named Southeast New Mexico College.

[ 33 ] The present-day main building was built in 1980; an additional instruction center was added in 1987 and the computer facilities wing was completed in 1996.
