This region of Riau Islands province near of strait of malacca the bussiest shipping line in the world. It has an area of 3,432.7 km 2, and at the 2023 estimate had a population of 1,941,225 [2]
The main islands are Batam, Rempang, Galang, Bintan, Combol, Kundur, and Karimun. Tanjung Pinang located in the south of Bintan Island is the provincial capital. Tanjung Balai Karimun is an international port along with Tanjung Pinang.
The discrepancy of the numbers of Indonesian islands is due to the earlier surveys including "tidal islands"; sandy cays and rocky reefs that appear during low tide and are submerged during high tide. As of 2023, 17,024 island have been named by Geospatial Information Agency and published in Indonesian Gazetteer. [1]
