Edith Margaret Garrud (née Williams; 1872–1971) was a British martial artist, suffragist and playwright. She was the first British female teacher of jujutsu and one of the first female martial arts instructors in the western world.

Jujutsu (/ ˈ dʒ uː dʒ uː t s uː / joo-joo-tsu; Japanese: 柔術 jūjutsu, pronounced [dʑɯꜜːʑɯtsɯ] ⓘ), also known as jiu-jitsu and ju-jitsu, is a family of Japanese martial arts and a system of close combat (unarmed or with a minor weapon) that can be used in a defensive or offensive manner to kill or subdue one or more weaponless or armed and armored opponents.
NOTE: Jujutsu spelled "Jujitsu" is how the Australian line of the school has chosen to spell the art. There are other common romanizations of the art in the West, whereas the modern Hepburn romanization is "jūjutsu." Some of the other spellings used are Jiu-jitsu, Ju-Jitsu, Ju jitsu and so-on.
In 1994 de Been established the Australian Federation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (AFBJJ). [3] [5] The goal of the federation being to help organize and regulate the sport to an international standard. [6] The federation was modelled off of the Confederacao Brasileira de Jiu-Jitsu and following IBJJF guidelines. [6]
