Cold Stream is an unincorporated community in Hampshire County in the U.S. state of West Virginia. Cold Stream is located north of Capon Bridge on Cold Stream Road (West Virginia Secondary Route 15). Referred to as Edwards Run in its past, the community of Cold Stream is in proximity to where Edwards Run empties into the Cacapon River.
In 1961, Sam Ashelman (1913–2010), a Washington, D.C. businessman who had been influential in the consumer cooperative movement, bought the property, consisting of about 1,200 acres including a landmark 1913 house built by author John Herbert Quick and called Coolfont in reference to nearby springs. [1]

The Appalachian wood fern, which grows on moss, was once thought to have been extinct but is found in abundance near the cold vents at the base of Ice Mountain. [15] Parts of Ice Mountain are barren, but the majority of the ridge is covered in mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia), sweet birch (Betula lenta), and Virginia pine (Pinus virginiana). [7]

Bald Knob is one of only four mountain summits in West Virginia that rise above 4,800 feet (1,500 m), the other three being Spruce Knob, Thorny Flat, and an unnamed summit near Snowshoe, WV. The south face of Bald Knob is the site of the headwaters of Leatherbark Run , West Virginia's highest stream.
