The college was founded in Susupe in 1976. NMC today has three campuses on the islands of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. The main campus on Saipan is in Fina Sisu. NMC is the sole public college within the Commonwealth and is accredited by the Senior College and University Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. [1]

In 1977, the CNMI State Board of Education established the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Public School System (CNMI PSS) who oversee the state preschool, elementary and secondary schools. [4] The CNMI PSS functions at the state and local level of education and is the only institution that provides public education in the region. [4]
Previously Rota Elementary & Junior High School in Songsong had elementary classes. [13] Sinapalo Elementary was built in two phases, with the Rota government and Rota Resort Hotel financing it. In 1995 phase I was built. There was a four-year hiatus in the construction that ended when the Rota government allowed it to continue.
