In 1892, an extension of the Chicago and West Michigan Railway from Traverse City to Petoskey was built through Acme. [8] Acme's post office closed on February 15, 1933. However, it was reestablished on February 1, 1952. [9] In 1986, the tallest building in Grand Traverse County, the tower at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, opened in Acme. [10]
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is a U.S. national lakeshore in the northwestern Lower Peninsula of Michigan.Located within Benzie and Leelanau counties, the park extends along a 35-mile (56 km) stretch of Lake Michigan's eastern coastline, as well as North and South Manitou islands, preserving a total of 71,199 acres (111 sq mi; 288 km 2).
Much of the Leelanau Peninsula is protected as parkland. The southwest of the peninsula is home to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Within the lakeshore is the Port Oneida Rural Historic District, which preserves a historic ghost town. The northern tip of the peninsula is home to Leelanau State Park and the Grand Traverse Light.
