Consumer protection in California began with the passage of the Medical Practice Act of 1876. The Act was designed to regulate the State's medical professionals, who up to that point had operated virtually unchecked. However, an actual government agency with the legal authority to enforce the Act was not created until 1878.
The government offered diplomas in optometry courses of two years duration conferred by State Medical Faculties, empowered under the Indian Medical Degree Act, 1916 (as per Government of India Notification Department of Education, Health and Lands No,1964 dated 16 December 1926, effective from 15 November 1929).
Initially, from 1925 to 1928, students completed a four-year undergraduate program with a BS degree in physics and a Certificate in Optometry (COpt), the latter qualifying graduates for California State optometry licensing examinations. In 1929, the major was revised to Physics-Optometry with a terminal degree of BS in Physics-Optometry (+ COpt).
Some states may require a written examination for a license, while others may require several years of field experience as a student or intern, or both. The requirements regarding who must be licensed may include uncommon or strange licenses; for example, four states require licensing for interior designers. [4]
