He was born in Red Hook, New York on June 24, 1809. He graduated from Union College in 1828, then went on to study law and pass the bar. In 1836 Masten moved to Buffalo and established a law practice. He and his wife, the former Christina Cameron, were the first civilian owners of the Wilcox Mansion on Delaware Avenue. [2]
After leaving Oxford, Wilcox moved to Buffalo, New York, where he began practicing law. He was connected with the law firms Crowley, Movius & Wilcox; Allen, Movius, & Wilcox; Movius & Wilcox; Wilcox & Miner and Wilcox & Bull. [1] He served as counsel for the commission acquiring land for the Niagara Falls Reservation from 1883 to 1885. [1]

The Buffalo History Museum was constructed in 1901 as the New York State pavilion for the Pan-American Exposition of 1901 and is the sole surviving permanent structure from the exposition. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 23, 1980, and designated a National Historic Landmark on February 27, 1987.
