It is a typical Pacific Northwest headland, forming a high steep bluff above the ocean. At its highest point, Cape Perpetua rises to over 800 feet (244 m) above sea level. From its crest, an observer can see 70 miles (113 km) of Oregon coastline and as far as 37 miles (60 km) out to sea on a clear day. [1]
It is 12 miles (19 km) long and thickly forested along steep and rugged coastline with a few small sand beaches. It is named in honor of Samuel H. Boardman, the first Oregon Parks superintendent. [2] It is located from 3 to 15 miles (5 to 24 km) north of Brookings, between the Pacific Ocean and U.S. Route 101.
It is the oldest continuously operating inn in the Pacific Northwest, and is the site where author Jack London completed his novel Valley of the Moon. The inn also housed actors from the early days of Hollywood when they wanted to escape from the film studios. Celebrities Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, and Orson Welles stayed at the inn.

Sunset Beach State Recreation Site is a state park in Clatsop County, Oregon, United States, administered by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. Nobuo Fujita (藤田 信雄, Fujita Nobuo) (1911 – 30 September 1997) was a Japanese naval aviator of the Imperial Japanese Navy who flew a floatplane from the long-range submarine aircraft carrier I-25 and conducted the Lookout Air Raids in southern Oregon on September 9, 1942, making him the only Axis pilot during World War II to aerial bomb the contiguous United States.
