Port Everglades is a seaport in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, located in Broward County. Port Everglades is one of South Florida's foremost economic engines, as it is the gateway for both international trade and cruise vacations. In 2022, Port Everglades was ranked the third-busiest cruise homeport, accommodating more than 1.72 million passengers. [3]
With this new route, the Port Everglades Expressway was then planned to be built as an Interstate highway designated I-595 to provide an Interstate connection between I-75 and I-95. The first piece of the south extension of I-75 to open was a short segment just east of Fort Myers from SR 78 south to Corkscrew Road in 1979.
The Walt Disney World Resort is also located in this area and is served by Disney Transport, its own internal transportation system consisting of buses, watercraft, parking lot trams, and the Walt Disney World Monorail System. The latter is one of the busiest mass transit rail systems in North America, with over 150,000 riders served each day. [9]
The road had reached as far as Paradise Key, now the Royal Palm area of the Everglades National Park, [7] when it was dedicated with the Royal Palm State Park on November 23, 1916, as the Ingraham Highway, and named for James E. Ingraham, the president of the Model Land Company and vice-president of the associated Florida East Coast Railway. [8]
The Everglades Foundation is a group that supports the Tamiami Trail bridging and dedicated to Everglades restoration. [ 18 ] In 2013, Florida announced a $90 million commitment to elevate 2.6 miles (4.2 km) of the road to allow natural drainage into the Everglades and Everglades National Park.
