Matthew 18:21–35. This depiction by Jan van Hemessen (c. 1556) shows the moment when the king scolds the servant. The lines before the parable itself are similar to Luke 17:3–4. The talent in this parable was worth about 6,000 denarii, so that one debt is 600,000 times as large as the other. [1]
Chapter 18 of the Gospel of Matthew contains the fourth of the five Discourses of Matthew, also called the Discourse on the Church or the ecclesiastical discourse. [1] [2] It compares "the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven" to a child, and also includes the parables of the lost sheep and the unforgiving servant, the second of which also refers to the Kingdom of Heaven.
While Mark 4:33–34 [23] and Matthew 13:34–35 [24] may suggest that Jesus would only speak to the "crowds" in parables, while in private explaining everything to his disciples, some modern scholars do not support the private explanations argument and surmise that Jesus used parables as a teaching method. [25]
The Klosterneuburg Altar, made in 1181 by Nicholas of Verdun, includes the scene with this meaning. [23] Another biblical theme linked to the winepress referenced by commentators was the allegory of the "Vineyard of God" or "True Vine", found in Isaiah 27:2–5, John 15:1 and Matthew 21:33–45, understood as a metaphor for the church. [24]
It appears in Matthew 5:14–15, Mark 4:21–25 and Luke 8:16–18. In Matthew, the parable is a continuation of the discourse on salt and light in Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, whereas in Mark and Luke, it is connected with Jesus' explanation of the Parable of the Sower. The parable also appears in the non-canonical Gospel of Thomas as saying 33.
