Longmeadow is located in the western part of the state, just south of the city of Springfield, and is bordered on the west by the Connecticut River and Agawam, to the east by East Longmeadow, and to the south by Enfield, Connecticut. It extends approximately 3 miles (5 km) north to south and 4 miles (6.4 km) east to west.

Longmeadow's village green was laid out in the early 18th century, and it is the area around which the town center developed. It is located on a sandy ridge on a terrace about 1 mile (1.6 km) east of the Connecticut River, with a flood plain in between that now also carries Interstate 91.
Longmeadow's Field Hockey's team won its first state title in 2022, after seven previous final appearances. This was the final game for head Coach Ann Simons, who had coached the program since 1981 and was awarded the Massachusetts and New England coach of the year for 2022 by Max Field Hockey. Longmeadow Street, located on a terrace above that plain, was from an early date the principal north-south route on the east side of the river, and the town's principal thoroughfare. In the 19th century, the quarrying of brownstone became a major industry, prompting a shift in population away from the river and toward the quarries further east.
Following the establishment of the U.S. Air Force in 1947, Westover Field became Westover Air Force Base. In 1951, Air Defense Command (ADC) arrived, but then turned over the base to Strategic Air Command (SAC) in 1955 with the relocation of Headquarters, Eighth Air Force (HQ 8AF) to Westover AFB.
In 2009 the Girls' Varsity Tennis team had an undefeated season and eventually won the state title. That same year, the Boys' tennis team won the Central Massachusetts Division Title but lost to Longmeadow in the state semi-final. In 2010, the Girls' team received a #1 seeding in the state tournament. [11]
The Reggie Lewis Center track and field facility is generally regarded as one of the premier facilities in the Northeastern United States, and is also one of the premier facilities in the United States as a whole. The venue has hosted the Boston Indoor Games meeting every year since 1996. [8]
