Villa La Pietra is a renaissance villa in the hills outside Florence, in Tuscany in central Italy. It was formerly the home of Arthur Acton and later of his son Harold Acton, on whose death in 1994 it was bequeathed to New York University. [1]: 18 The villa is now home to NYU Florence.

Laurence Acton (died 1410) was an MP for Newcastle upon Tyne in 1386, 1391, September 1397, and 1399. The son of the MP of the same name, his grandfather and uncle were both MPs named William Acton. He was also bailiff (1385 to 1393), justice of the peace (26 December 1390), and mayor (1393–1396) of the aforementioned town.
Sir Harold Mario Mitchell Acton CBE (5 July 1904 – 27 February 1994) was a British writer, scholar, and aesthete who was a prominent member of the Bright Young Things.He wrote fiction, biography, history and autobiography.

Samuel Longley Bickford (1885–1959) began his restaurant career in 1902. In the 1910s, he was a vice president at the Waldorf System lunchroom chain in New England and, in 1921, he established his own quick-lunch Bickford's restaurants in New York.
