The City Hall building is part of the Downtown Ponca City Historic District where it is noted as the "Ponca City Municipal Complex". It is a contributing building in the Downtown Ponca City Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. [2] The city hall was restored during 2001-2003. [3]
A Municipal Magistrate may be appointed as an additional Magistrate in conjunction with his other duties. They do not have civil jurisdiction, they have jurisdiction over any breach of any municipal by-laws per the Municipal Council's Ordinance. The Ponca signed their last treaty with the US in 1865. [11] In the 1868 US-Sioux Treaty of Fort Laramie [12] the US mistakenly included all Ponca lands in the Great Sioux Reservation. Conflict between the Ponca and the Sioux/Lakota, who now claimed the land as their own by US law, forced the US to remove the Ponca from their own ancestral lands.
