The Spartacus League (German: Spartakusbund) was a Marxist revolutionary movement organized in Germany during World War I. [1] It was founded in August 1914 as the International Group by Rosa Luxemburg, Karl Liebknecht, Clara Zetkin, and other members of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) who were dissatisfied with the party's official policies in support of the war.
The uprising took its popular name from the Marxist Spartacus League (Spartakusbund), which Luxemburg and Liebknecht founded in 1914. When the KPD was established on 1 January 1919, the Spartacus League became part of it.

Friedrich Ebert, the SPD leader who effectively controlled the Council of the People's Deputies. The revolution reached Berlin on Saturday 9 November. With the backing of the SPD, the Revolutionary Stewards and the Spartacus League – groups that favoured a soviet-style council republic – called a general strike.
The Ebert government felt threatened by a coup from the Left and was certainly undermined by the Spartacus movement. That underlay its cooperation with the Supreme Army Command and the Freikorps . The brutal actions of the Freikorps during the various revolts estranged many left democrats from the SPD.
The Spartacus League led the failed Spartacist uprising, after which Luxemburg and Liebknecht were killed by right-wing paramilitary Freikorps troops. Jogiches was murdered in Moabit prison in Berlin on 10 March 1919, likely since he was investigating the assassination of Luxemburg and Liebknecht.

Karl Paul August Friedrich Liebknecht (German: [ˈliːpknɛçt] ⓘ; 13 August 1871 – 15 January 1919) was a German revolutionary socialist and anti-militarist.A member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) beginning in 1900, he was one of its deputies in the Reichstag from 1912 to 1916, where he represented the left-revolutionary wing of the party.
