In September 2012 Toyota announced that due to customers' concerns about range and charging time, the production of the Scion iQ EV (Toyota eQ in Japan) will be limited to about 100 units for special fleet use in Japan and the U.S. only, down from 600 originally planned. The iQ EV/eQ is scheduled to be released in both countries in December 2012.
An identical car, rebadged as the Toyota iQ Sport, was later presented at the September 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Motor Trend reported the production version of Scion iQ would begin in North America in late 2010 for the 2011 model year, or in early 2011 for the 2012 model year.
Scion was a marque of Toyota that debuted in 2003 and was available only in the United States and Canada. The marque was intended to appeal to younger customers: the Scion brand emphasized inexpensive, stylish, and distinctive sport compact vehicles, and used a simplified "pure price" sales concept that eschewed traditional trim levels and dealer haggling.
