Smith County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 233,479. [1] Its county seat is Tyler. [2] Smith County is named for James Smith, a general during the Texas Revolution. Smith County is part of the Tyler metropolitan statistical area and the Tyler–Jacksonville combined statistical area.
The Schertz and Cibolo School Districts combined in the 1930s. On April 24, 1961, the school system became an independent school district. [1] In 1966, the community served by the Lower Valley School voted to consolidate with the Schertz-Cibolo system. [8] In 1967, Universal City was added to the name. [1]
Looking to improve the school district's recognizability, the district's board of trustees voted unanimously to change the district's name to Rockport-Fulton Independent School District on June 21, 2023 in order to reflect the more well known Rockport-Fulton High School. This change was shortly thereafter approved by the Texas Education Agency.
