Lake Mainit is the fourth largest lake in the Philippines, having a surface area of 173.40 square kilometres (66.95 sq mi). [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] The lake is also the deepest lake in the country with maximum depth reaching 223 metres (732 ft).
The first inhabitants of Mainit settled near Lake Mainit in what is now barangay San Isidro (formerly called "Daang Lungsod" or "Old Town"). It was believed that the constant harassment of pirates forced the original settlers to move to the present town site. Mainit was established as a Barrio in 1904 under the Municipality of Placer.

The Lake Mainit Development Alliance (LMDA) is an alliance of municipalities or local government units, government line agencies and civil society organizations in Lake Mainit area. Its significant role is to serve as the coordinating body of multi stakeholders in preserving and promoting Lake Mainit ecosystem.
Sitio Anahaw was situated near Lake Mainit, and would often be flooded due to heavy rains. During rainy seasons, the local families transferred to a place now called Alegria. The name Alegria was derived from the Spanish word which means "lively". Its name was given by Judge Sixto Olga who happened to spend a night in the place.
