WWE previously held a pay-per-view (PPV) titled Fatal 4-Way in 2010 for their Raw and SmackDown brands. It was a gimmick PPV, with several matches contested as fatal four-way matches. [3] This 2010 event was the only WWE PPV to carry the Fatal 4-Way name, after which, the promotion revived the name for this second NXT TakeOver event.
This was the only Fatal 4-Way PPV produced by WWE for their main roster, as it was replaced by Capitol Punishment in 2011; however, the promotion revived the name for their developmental territory NXT in 2014 as the brand's second TakeOver event titled NXT TakeOver: Fatal 4-Way.
Beginning with the second event, TakeOver: Fatal 4-Way, many events included a subtitle, which either revived old WWE event names or were named after the event's location, some of which occurred annually, but some of the later ones were simply titled by their installment number. A total of 36 TakeOver events were held from May 2014 to August 2021.
With the scheduling of NXT TakeOver: Fatal 4-Way in September 2014, the "TakeOver" name would subsequently be used as the brand name for NXT's live shows. The TakeOver events were held several times a year, often as support shows for one of WWE's main shows, such as WrestleMania or SummerSlam. [2]
