Ripley is a market town and civil parish in the Amber Valley district of Derbyshire, England, northeast of Derby, northwest of Heanor, southwest of Alfreton and northeast of Belper. The town is continuous with Heanor, Eastwood and Ilkeston as part of the wider Nottingham Urban Area .
Amber Valley is a local government district with borough status in the east of Derbyshire, England, taking its name from the River Amber.Its council is based in Ripley.The district covers a semi-rural area lying to the north of the city of Derby.
By 1928, Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire was given power to operate a trolley bus system. The first trolley buses were introduced in 1931, and on 5 October 1933 the last tram ran on the Nottingham to Ripley route. The trolley bus system was very efficient and reliable, the journey from Ripley to Nottingham taking 90 minutes.
Butterley is a village in the civil parish of Ripley, in the Amber Valley district, in the county of Derbyshire, England. The area is dominated by the now disused site of the Butterley Company and the Butterley Reservoir. It is the headquarters of the Midland Railway – Butterley, located at the site of the Butterley Railway Station.
It has 56 spans each of 45.7 metres (150 ft)and is 3,480 metres (11,420 ft) long. The girders were fabricated by the Butterley Company of Ripley, Derbyshire. [12] The rail bridge served the busy Howrah-Chennai line until its decommissioning, a century later, in 1997 when a replacement bridge was built at the side of the Old Godavari Bridge.
Ripley was an Urban District in Derbyshire, England from 1894 to 1974. [1] [2] It was created under the Local Government Act 1894.The district was abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 and combined with the Alfreton, Belper and Heanor Urban Districts and the Belper Rural District to form the new Amber Valley district.
The engine, built by the Butterley Company of Ripley in 1829, still runs for demonstration purposes and is occasionally open to the public. The northern part of the village on the west side of the main road out towards New Road is called 'The Hall' due to the location of the now demolished Middleton Hall.
Ripley railway station was a railway station which served the town of Ripley in Derbyshire, England. It was opened in 1856 by the Midland Railway on its Ripley branch from Little Eaton Junction, approximately 3 miles north of Derby. In 1890 it became the terminus of a line from Heanor Junction on the Erewash Valley Line near Langley Mill.
