The job was to fixture and drill holes in the front fenders of GM trucks to attach chrome moldings. Each drill cut a new hole every 2 minutes for 16 hours a day. The drills started out as jobber length, after numerous sharpening's they were reduced to machine screw length, then to stubby length ( less than 1/2" of flutes) and finally became ...

Aug 19, 2016. #3. I purchased their full number/letter set and a set of the Silver&Deming bits last year and have only broken one bit which was immediately replaced. Other than that they have worked well. The colbalt m42 bits are very sharp but are brittle.
I would definitely go with the fractional set first (1/16 - 1/2). Next would be the Number set as they are needed often as tap drill sizes. Letter drills are also used for tap drill sizes, but not nearly as frequently. Sometimes the Number and Letter drills are just needed for a hole size that is in between the standard fractional sizes. 115 piece Stubby Length Drill Sets in Case - $150 (san jose, CA) Thread starter MrWhoopee;
You can get away with HSS for most gun work. Cobalt is better, but more money. 135* will leave less of a burr where it matters (e.g. gas ports). For a lot of the rest I suggest investing in a reamer index - when size matters, reamers are your friend. Again HSS is fine, most firearms work is in pretty machinable metal.

Then if you drill'n'tap small holes a stub/screw length 0-60 set will do the trick. Then if you drill'n'tap larger holes, maybe a stub/screw length letter set would do the trick. I use my 29pc set and number set the most as the majority of my work is small, but the letter set does come in handy every so often.
