LittleMachineShop.com has some value kits and information on the harbor freight mill that I found helpful. I already purchased a clampling kit so I'm looking at this for starter: Vise 3" plus Parallels and mounting kit End Mill Set 10 Piece 2 and 4 flute (will probably need to get a couple more specific ones) Collet R8 Set of 5
The CNC stuff is cool, but its an extra 1000-1500 bucks. You can get decent steppers in the 400 oz-in torque range for 60 to 70 apiece. Drivers roughly the same. Breakout board for 80 to 120 bucks. Power supply for 120. Cabling, limit switches, e-stop, maybe some ferrite chokes, another 100.
2024 GOALS coverage from the ARFCOM media team. [ARCHIVED THREAD] - Modifying the Harbor Freight Mini Mill to work on AR-15 lowers in a vertical position. ARCHIVED. Posted: 3/29/2013 12:20:57 PM EDT. Just as general background information, I have been working on and building AR's since 1970 (courtesy of Uncle Sam).
I bought a Harbor Freight mini mill used from a guy who tried to do an 80% but he said he failed. The machine was dirty and still covered in the red packing grease mixed with chips. I took it apart and cleaned the grease and inspected everything. I replaced the gear drive with a belt drive. I replaced the tilt column with a fixed column.
I got one of the little harbor freight mills, and futzed around with it a bunch trying to improve the shortcomings. Added DRO, an air shock for the head, metal gears, belt drive, etc. Then I got a grizzly G0704 and the HF mini was banished to small jobs in aluminum.
I'm ready to upgrade from my old Harbor Freight mini mill and am looking for a mini mill with digital readouts. Little Machine Shop is offering an upgraded version of the 3990 HiTorqe Mini Mill called the 4190 Deluxe that incorporates 3-Axis DRO.
I use a Taig mini lathe that I bought probably 10 years ago. It's worked well for center punching cones for the half dozen F1 cans I've built. I did buy the Harbor Freight mini mill so I could clip cones, both have been used exclusively for F1 work. ETA: Punching through the end cap for a .300 can.
I have the Harbor Freight Mini-mill. I have completed three 80% lowers on it without a hitch. I paid $400 for it when it was on sale, I had an additional 25% off coupon, bringing it down fro $600. I spent an additional $60 for mill bits and $50 for a 7/16 mill set. So far no problems with it.
Also, OP, you want a Harbor frieght Mini Mill with the V-belt upgrade and airspring upgrade from little machine shop. Worth every penny and I do lots of other stuff with it now. Posted: 4/23/2018 1:59:10 PM EDT
