The installed email is Thunderbird ver 17.04. Thunderbird itself opens individual eml files saved to disk just fine in a window on this Win 8 PC. That is not the issue. It is the Windows/File Explorer Preview Pane on this PC that is not displaying a preview of the eml file. I also have a Win 7 64 bit PC with all the same programs installed.

OK, the problem seems to be resolved by using Windows System Restore (I got this tip from a thread in Microsoft's user support forum). I still haven't pinpointed what caused the problem in the first place. Very probably related to Windows Defender -- note that the restore point was saved BEFORE Defender was turned on.
