Basically the way I see it, until CUNY is ready for AMCAS applicants they will carry over their sophie students into the clinical portion of med school, which is what sophie lacked and hence had to transfer students to accredited schools.
The thing is, a CUNY student does have the possibility of getting into an Ivy Medical school, but the student who went to a private university will have a bigger shot.
Several members from my medical school class went to Hunter or another CUNY as did I. You will have to work a little harder in terms of getting a medical school acceptance ( Have a really good MCAT and GPA, plus be on top of your applications as CUNY premed advisors are sometimes overwhelmed and/or not the best).
I have the option to attend Cornell (CALS) on a Pre-Med track or go to the Sophie Davis school of biomedical education at City College BS/MD. Sophie Davis. -No Mcat. -guaranteed seat to cuny School of med. -BS in 3 years and med for the next 4. -virtually no debt for the first 3 years. Cornell. -name, prestige.

So, with more schools opening, the competition will sadly increase even more. Really, the only way for competition for medical school to reduce is for the economy to improve and for applicants to look for other, much more suitable alternatives.
The CUNY medical school is right on campus (in Harrris Hall), so if you are curious, you might take the time and speak with the faculty there. If you are interested in Research they offer many opportunities for you to involve yourself, but in the end its up to you.

Also, Cornell is known for its super-competitive environment and grade deflation.
