Rate of fire: 700–800 rounds/min cyclic sustained (M16A1) [14] 700–900 rounds/min cyclic sustained ... The M16 has a safe/semi/auto selective fire trigger group ...
In a standard issue M16, the gas tube is roughly 16 inches (410 mm) long to produce an automatic (cyclic) rate of fire of approximately 650 rounds per minute. Shortening the barrel increases the rate of fire significantly and thereby makes the weapon difficult to control and less reliable.
Typical cyclic rates of fire are 600–1100 rpm for assault rifles, 400–1400 rpm for submachine guns and machine pistols, and 600–1,500 rpm for machine guns. M134 Miniguns mounted on attack helicopters and other combat vehicles can achieve rates of fire of over 100 rounds per second (6,000 rpm).
The weight of the cyclic components of the gun has been doubled (while retaining the weapon's weight at less than 8 pounds). Compared to the standard M4, which in automatic fires 700–950 rounds a minute, the rate of fire of the ArmWest, LLC M4 is heavily reduced both to save ammunition and reduce barrel wear.
Rates of fire Both the AK-47 and the M16 are select-fire weapons capable of firing in semi-automatic and full-auto, or semi-auto and 3-round-burst for the later model M16s. However, the semi-auto and 3-round-burst capabilities of the M16A2 and M4 models have less combat capability than their predecessors or AK-47-type rifles. [ 146 ]
The MAR has a cyclic rate of fire of around 650–750 RPM (rounds per minute), which is a bit higher than the full sized rifles. An optional magazine adapter inserted inside the magazine well allows the use of standard 20- and 30-round M16 magazines.
By changing the configuration of the washers, a higher spring rate was achieved, and this was the solution for the bulk of the misfires. The weapon, when cold, would fire at about 650 rounds per minute (rpm). When it was very hot, after several hundred rounds had been fired, the cyclic rate climbed as high as 1,100 rpm.
Or, alternatively, Army officials omitted the feature to discourage troops from employing the M231 in lieu of the issue M16 rifles. Likewise the intended mechanism to bring down the firing rate had been removed from the design again thus bringing the rate of fire back up to a rate of 1,100-1,200 round/min.
