The world premiere of West Point of the Air (1935) was held at the Majestic on March 22, 1935. The world premiere of The Texans (1938) was held at the Majestic on July 16, 1938. [10] The world premiere of The Lusty Men (1952) was held at the Majestic in 1952 with stars Robert Mitchum, Arthur Kennedy and Arthur Hunnicutt attending. [10]
The theaters originally showed live vaudeville performance, but eventually transitioned to showing movies. The Palace was purchased by Loew's in 1934, and was known for a time as "Loew's Poli Theater". [2] When Bridgeport's factories began to close in the 1960s and 1970s, the fortunes of the complex declined, and both theaters closed in the 1970s.
In October 2010, Hoyts announced that it will acquire AMC for an unknown amount. The purchase was completed in November 2010. Hoyts has stated on their website that AMC customers will now have access to a wider variety of films, promotions, competitions and cinema offers. Hoyts have also promised to increase 3D facilities for the cinema chain.
The Majestic Picture Theatre is located on the corner of Eacham Place and Catherine Street in Malanda on the Atherton Tableland opposite the Malanda Post Office. The theatre is a prominent building in the township and is located in close proximity to the Malanda Hotel, which is still owned by the English family, the original proprietors of the theatre.
