The Majestic Theatre opened as Portland's first "palace" for motion pictures on June 10, 1911, at the northeast corner of Southwest Park Avenue and Washington Street. [1] It had 1,100 seats, [1] and was originally owned by Edwin F. James. [2]

The Majestic Theatre, constructed as the Majestic Hall and modified in the 1930s to show "talkies", also demonstrates the evolution of film exhibition venues in Queensland, whereby community halls were often used to show pictures, prior to converting the hall into a picture theatre, or constructing a purpose-built cinema.
The theaters originally showed live vaudeville performance, but eventually transitioned to showing movies. The Palace was purchased by Loew's in 1934, and was known for a time as "Loew's Poli Theater". [2] When Bridgeport's factories began to close in the 1960s and 1970s, the fortunes of the complex declined, and both theaters closed in the 1970s.
