It has a masthead sloop rig, a raked stem, a vertical transom, a large self-bailing cockpit, with under-seat lockers, a transom-hung rudder controlled by a tiller and a fixed fin keel.

A few of the early boats were designed with a deep fin cast iron keel with a bulb. A fiberglass fin keel version was built in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Butler built a marina in Oxnard, California, and founded Catalina Yachts. His first new product was the trailerable 22-foot (6.7 m) Catalina with a movable keel, and he continued to build the smaller boats, such as the Coronado 15, the Omega, the Super Satellite, and the Drifter.
