From its town center just east of the Connecticut River, Sunderland is 10 miles (16 km) south of the county seat of Greenfield, 28 miles (45 km) north of Springfield, and 90 miles (140 km) west of Boston. Most of the town's population lies in the western part of town, along the river, though there is a small village north of Mount Toby.
The Sunderland Center Historic District encompasses the historic center of the farming town of Sunderland, Massachusetts, on the plains of the Connecticut River.The multi-acre district runs along North and South Main Street (Massachusetts Route 47), roughly from Old Amherst Road to North Silver Lane, and includes Bridge Street and the Sunderland Bridge across the river.

Occupying four new buildings, the Union #38 School District (PreK-6) serves the towns of Conway, Deerfield, Sunderland and Whately. Each town is governed by a local school committee. The Frontier Regional School District (grades 7–12) completed its building project in September 1998 and is governed by a separate nine member school committee.
