On May 23, 2016, the Portland Pirates' franchise was sold and relocated to Springfield, Massachusetts, [1] [2] and became the Springfield Thunderbirds. [3] A team of investors headed by former Pirates executives W. Godfrey Wood and Brad Church—the latter a former Portland player as well—announced their intentions to put an ECHL team in Portland to fill the void, joining as early as 2017. [4]
The 2024–25 ECHL season is the 37th season of the ECHL.The regular season began on October 18, 2024, and will end on April 13, 2025, with the 2025 Kelly Cup playoffs to follow.
A re-enactment of the preparations for the Portland show is featured in the bio film This Is Elvis. The venue hosted the America East Conference (then the ECAC North) men's basketball tournament in 1980. Two AHL hockey clubs that have called the arena home, include the Portland Pirates and three time Calder Cup champions, the Maine Mariners.

Following the 1986–87 season, the original Mariners franchise was moved to Utica, New York, as the Utica Devils. However, Portland was not without hockey, as the league approved an expansion team supplied by players from the Boston Bruins. The expansion team assumed the Mariners name and history and took on the Bruins' black-gold-white scheme.
