After graduating from French military academies, in 1806 he became a captain of grenadiers and adjutant to Marshal Nicolas Oudinot. For his participation in the 1806–07 campaign he received the Virtuti Militari order and the Légion d'honneur. On 30 January 1808 he became captain of the 1st Infantry Regiment of the Duchy of Warsaw.
To celebrate the victory and commemorate the occasion, the Polish king established the Virtuti Militari order, with which he decorated Poniatowski and Kościuszko first. At the Battle of Dubienka fought by Kościuszko and his soldiers on 18 July, the line of the Southern Bug River was defended for five days against fourfold odds.
On 10 December 1806, he moved to the newly formed Polish Army in the cavalry of Colonel Wojciech Męciński. This unit was transformed into the 4th Military Regiment of the Duchy of Warsaw . Franciszek Fornalski participated in campaigns in Prussia (1806), Galicia (1809), Russia (1812) and Saxony (1813).
