U.S. Route 61 or U.S. Highway 61 (U.S. 61) is a major United States highway that extends 1,400 miles (2,300 km) between New Orleans, Louisiana and the city of Wyoming, Minnesota. The highway generally follows the course of the Mississippi River and is designated the Great River Road for much of its route.
US 61 runs concurrently with US 14 and State Highway 16 (MN 16) as it enters the state. The four-lane divided highway continues north through La Crescent. US 61 follows the Mississippi River through southeast Minnesota; through the cities of Winona, Wabasha, Lake City, and Red Wing. US 61 is a two-lane roadway between Wabasha and Red Wing.
U.S. Route 61 Business (US 61 Business) continues east with US 136. The bypass ends at US 218, which is also the northern end of the business route. From there, US 61 and US 218 head north together along a four-lane divided highway and past Keokuk's airport. Near Montrose, US 218 exits the highway and heads northwest towards Donnellson.
The route is a scenic highway, following the North Shore of Lake Superior, and is part of the Lake Superior Circle Tour designation that runs through Minnesota, Ontario, Michigan, and Wisconsin. This roadway was designated U.S. Highway 61 (US 61) until 1991.
