Midgaard, also known as the Lautner Cottage, is a chalet style log cabin located on Middle Island Point, near Marquette, Michigan.It is significant as the first building that then-12-year-old John Lautner (later an influential American architect) helped construct. [3]
The house was built between 1890 and 1894 by a prominent lumber baron, David Whitney Jr., who was considered not only one of Detroit's wealthiest personalities, but also one of Michigan's wealthiest citizens. [5] The house is estimated to have cost US$ 400,000 (equal to $14,086,154 today), [6] and it was featured in several newspapers of that time.

The 15 cabins are located on a two-track loop behind the hotel. They are hipped roof structures made from cut stone, with concrete floors and pine veneer interior walls and ceilings. Twelve of the cabins are single-room structures with a kitchenette; the remaining three are two-bedroom units with a central living area.
