The Silver Creek church was located near what became Sellersburg in Clark County. In 1809, McCoy became pastor of Maria Creek Church near Vincennes. In 1810, the Church ordained him as a minister. He was the town jailor at Vincennes. Through illness and poverty, McCoy traveled widely, if unsuccessfully, on the frontier promoting the Baptist church.
Despite these challenges, the Silver Creek community continues to rally together in support of its "little white church." New windows, lecterns, and an antique pump organ were donated by local Anglicans following the 1995 burglary, and new silverware and linens were donated following the 2007 incident.
The area in what is known as Silver Creek Village today was first settled in 1959 and appeared on maps that next year. There was a Baptist church established in the 1970s. Its population was 250 in 2000 and the community is now a popular tourist destination. [2]
The post office was established under the name Silver Creek on June 13, 1890. The name was changed to Silvercreek on December 1, 1895. The post office closed on October 15, 1900. [2] Silver Creek's population was just 10 in 1902, and 11 in 1915. [3] Silver Creek United Methodist church still operates in the community. [4]
