The idea of one-hand typing is to touch type using only one hand (e.g. the left one), or mainly one hand. Its history and application are closely related to keyboard research on QWERTY and Dvorak keyboard layouts. Typing with one hand can be done in a number of ways, and novel approaches are still emerging.
In each case, one hand controls left/right, and the other hand controls up/down movement. A further variation is used when two players use the keyboard at the same time; for example, Gauntlet uses the combination 1QSD for Player 1, and 8IKL for Player 2.
The "Half-QWERTY" keyboard, invented by Edgar Matias, [2] [3] consists of only the left-hand half of a normal QWERTY keyboard, but when the space bar is held down, it switches to the right half of the keyboard, allowing a person to type with only one hand.
MessagEase Logo. MessagEase is an input method and virtual keyboard for touchscreen devices. It relies on a new entry system designed by Saied B. Nesbat, formatted as a 3x3 matrix keypad where users may press or swipe up, down, left, right, or diagonally to access all keys and symbols. [1]
A left-handed USB FrogPad. FrogPad is a small chorded keyboard about the size of a numeric keypad that can be used with one hand. It was produced by Frogpad Inc. The keyboard is optimized by character frequency. 85% of average keystrokes in English text can be typed without chording, and chords are limited to 2 fingers (opposable thumb and one finger).
Many keyboards have been designed for one-handed operation. The first one, a chorded keyboard, was invented by Douglas Engelbart. Other types of one-handed keyboards include the FrogPad, the Half-keyboard, [19] and one-handed Dvorak keyboard layouts designed for one hand typing.
