Market Square is a 103,000-square-foot (9,600 m 2) [1] neighborhood shopping center [2] in Lake Forest, Illinois, United States, in the Chicago metropolitan area. Opened in 1916, it is often cited as the first planned shopping center in the United States, with common design and management and designated area for parking automobiles.
Construction proceeded quickly, with some stores opening for business as early as September 1988. A grand opening ceremony was held for the first phase of the mall, consisting of 23 stores and 75,000 square feet of space, on November 2, 1988, with Lieutenant Governor Scott McCallum cutting the ceremonial ribbon. Northfield Square opened on August 1, 1990, at the intersection of Illinois Route 50 and Larry Power Road, just north of the Interstate 57 interchange.
