Ash is a young man who travels with various companions, aiming to fulfill his dream to become a Pokémon Master; his Pokémon lineup constantly changes over the course of the series, with its sole constant member being Pikachu, Ash's first Pokémon.
Ash and his friends find themselves in a mansion called the Scary House to shelter from the rain. Its owner Lon offers them some food. A Gastly, Haunter and Gengar scare Ash and his friends as a playful way of showing hospitality. Ash, Pikachu, Serena and Bonnie fall down some trapdoors into the basement.
Pikachu shocks Spearow, and in the process alerts a whole flock. The angered Spearow flock gives chase and attacks Pikachu. Ash quickly grabs Pikachu and dives to a waterfall in order to escape from the flock, and the two are fished out down river by a young girl, who tells Ash to take the injured Pikachu to the Pokémon Center in Viridian City.
Ash and Clemont have their first Kalos Region Pokémon battle. Team Rocket is also in the Kalos Region and they try to catch Ash's Pikachu, but they fail, thanks to Froakie, a Kalos Water-Type Pokémon starter who gets badly injured in the process. Ash and the others go to Professor Augustine Sycamore's lab to heal Froakie.
Collectible cards featuring Pikachu have appeared since the initial Pokémon Trading Card Game released in October 1996, including limited edition promotional cards. One of these collectible cards was "Pikachu Illustrator", limited to about 20-40 printed in 1998, and was auctioned off for about $55,000 in 2016, and then $375,000 in 2021.
Mewtwo exits with Ash and Pikachu, but not before explaining to Giovanni that Ash was the one who defeated MechaMew2. Giovanni breaks free of MechaMew2's grip and runs just before it blows up. In the forest, Ash's friends ask him what happened, but Ash can't remember Mewtwo's sudden appearance or how the battle ended.
