The park's border paralleled Wears Valley to the south, following the crest of Roundtop and Cove Mountain. With improvements to US-321 in the 1950s, tourist outlets began to trickle into Wears Valley. Cabin rentals and outdoor supply stores are among the more common tourism-oriented venues in the valley today.
Like other park border regions, the history and economy of the valley are intertwined with that of the Smokies. The primary community is Wears Valley. Wear Cove is a type of valley known as a "limestone window", created when erosion weathers through the older Precambrian sandstone and exposes the younger Paleozoic limestone beneath.

Located on 750 acres of Pine and Cypress forest, the campsite consists of two main camping areas: a portion used for campsites where visitors with tents or recreational vehicles can stay, and the remainder of the lodging area is occupied by permanent trailers, designed to resemble log cabins.

The cabin is a single-pen cabin built of chestnut logs, and measures 16 feet (4.9 m) by 18 feet (5.5 m). The interior included a puncheon-log floor and a loft, and a "tater hole" (a kind of small root cellar) near the fireplace. The front and back walls both have doors, although the cabin has no windows.
