State Highway 6 (SH 6) is a major New Zealand state highway.It extends from the Marlborough region in the northeastern corner of the South Island across the top of the island, then down the length of the island, initially along the West Coast and then across the Southern Alps through inland Otago and finally across the Southland Plains to the island's south coast.
The southern end of SH8 between Clarksville and Cromwell roughly follows the route taken by many miners and prospectors during the Otago gold rush of the 1860s. Many of the important sites of the gold rush lie close to the Highway and the Kawarau Gorge which extends to the northwest from Cromwell.
The current town was founded as Pembroke during the gold rush of the 19th century, and renamed to Wanaka in 1940. [3] Along with the rest of the Queenstown-Lakes District , Wānaka is growing rapidly, with the population increasing by 50% between 2005 and 2015.
