Koyapalli Kelappan (24 August 1889 – 7 October 1971) was an Indian politician, independence activist, educationist and journalist. During the Indian independence movement , he was the lead figure of Indian National Congress in Kerala and was popularly known as Kerala Gandhi .
Gandhi felt coercion in Kelappan’s fast. [citation needed] One of the major incidents that happened was the assault of A.K Gopalan by the opponents of the satyagraha movement. It roused the passion of the rebels to attempt a forceful entry into the temple and led to the provisional closure of the temple.
At the time of formation, K. Kelappan was the president and Mannathu Padmanabhan was the secretary. Nairs were the most economically and socially dominant community, as well as the most numerous, in what was traditionally a staunchly Hindu kingdom that rigorously and officially enforced distinctions between castes. [ 4 ]
Shri. K. Kelappan and the local dignitaries, Shri. T. M. Vasudevan Namboodiri and Shri. K. C. V. Raja identified the suitable 100 Acres of land for this purpose and approached the owners of this land, Vellayil Mana and The Pappinikkavu temple Devaswom to donate this land.
In April 1947, Kerala Varma inaugurated the Aikya Kerala Convention held in Thrissur under the chairmanship of K. Kelappan. [6] [2] The convention passed a resolution for the formation of a 'United Kerala'. [6] Since Kerala Varma stood for the unified Kerala (Aikya Keralam), he was known as Aikya Keralam Thampuran. [9]
