A large majority of its stations are located at Dutch highway rest areas. Fastned was founded in 2012.
The company was 100% owned by the local governments of the Netherlands. On 25 March 2020, Eneco Groep NV announced that it would be acquired by a joint venture, jointly owned by the Japanese companies Mitsubishi Corporation (80%) and Chubu Electric Power (20%).
