The state with the most universities is Gujarat with 97 universities, and Gujarat has also by far the most state private universities, 63 in number. [10]

Deemed university, or deemed-to-be-university, is an accreditation granted to higher educational institutions in India by the Department of Higher Education. [1] As of 14 November 2023 [update] , the UGC lists 124 institutes which were granted the deemed to be university status.
The University Grants Commission constituted an expert committee on 9 October 2015 to develop a framework for the ranking of universities and colleges in India and the framework developed by this expert committee has been incorporated into NIRF. [11]
The types of universities controlled by the UGC include Central universities, [3] [4] State universities, [5] Deemed universities [6] and Private universities [7] In addition to the above universities, other institutions are granted the permission to autonomously award degrees, and while not called "university" by name, act as such.
