The Kuznetsov NK-93 was a civilian aircraft engine, a hybrid between a turbofan and a turboprop known as a propfan. The engine was also unique in having a separate duct around the contra-rotating propellers , as most other propfans are unducted.
Kuznetsov's most powerful aviation engine is the Kuznetsov NK-321 that propels the Tupolev Tu-160 bomber and was formerly used in the later models of the Tu-144 supersonic transport (an SST that is now obsolete and no longer flown). The NK-321 produced a maximum of about 245 kN (55,000 lb f) of thrust. Kuznetsov aircraft engines include:
Other contra-rotating propeller engines that featured on common aircraft included the four powerful Kuznetsov NK-12 engines (each powering its own set of coaxial contra-rotating propellers) on the Soviet Union's Tupolev Tu-95 high-speed military bomber and Antonov An-22 military transport aircraft, and the Armstrong Siddeley Double Mamba (ASMD ...
Kuznetsov NK-92 turbofan (modified to NK-93 further on). 220 to < 350 kN; Kuznetsov NK-93 propfan. Projected to power the Il-96, Tu-204, and Tu-330. Kuznetsov NK-114 Ekranoplanes and aircraft engines; Kuznetsov NK-116 Beriev Be-2500 Neptun engine; Kuznetsov NK-144 afterburning turbofan. Powered the early models of the Tupolev Tu-144 supersonic ...
The A-90 uses one NK-12 engine mounted at the top of its T-tail, along with two turbofans installed in the nose. In the 1980s, Kuznetsov continued to develop powerful contra-rotating engines. The NK-110, which was tested in the late 1980s, had a contra-rotating propeller configuration with four blades in front and four in back, like the NK-12.
U.S. Air Force Lt. Heather "Lucky" Penney, an F-16 pilot at the time, was ordered into the air to intercept United Airlines Flight 93. Her father was a flight captain for United at the time.
Projected double-deck version of Il-96 for 550–600 passengers and powered by Kuznetsov NK-93 propfan engines. Following flight tests in 2007 the engines were removed and the aircraft was not developed further.
