Rather than using standard distances, target angles and sizes, sporting clay courses are designed to simulate the hunting of ducks, pheasants, and even rabbits.

The county is named for Stevens T. Mason, Governor of Michigan from 1835 to 1840. [5] It was created by the Michigan Legislature in 1840 as Notipekago County, [6] then renamed Mason County in 1843.
