The film was the third that Lewis had directed, after Navy Spy (1937), which he co-directed with Crane Wilbur and Courage of the West. [3] This was the second of four films in which Fuzzy Knight played the comic sidekick to Universal's new singing cowboy, Bob Baker.
Baker plays an undercover marshall investigating a series of stage coach robberies. After his father is killed, he determines to get justice, pretending to be a drifter while gradually gathering clues to the identify of the killers. Early in the story Bob meets Anita, who is trying to save her ranch after all her cattle have been stolen.

Baker died on November 28, 2014, at the age of 90 from natural causes. [4] In 2019, The Bob Baker Marionette Theater gained 501(c)3 non-profit status, and relocated into a 1920s silent movie theater in Highland Park. Inspired by Bob Baker's original renderings, the new space has been transformed into "The Place Where Imagination Dwells".
