In 1918 “The Ellsinore News” began publication. Its name was later changed to “The Carter County News.” The newspaper folded in 1926. In 1919 a new school building, a two-story brick structure, was built on the south side of town on the site where the school currently stands. In 1920 the Farmers State Bank was established.
President Carter died on Dec. 29, 2024, at the age of 100. His body will be transferred to Georgia for a private family funeral before he is buried on the grounds of his home in Plains.
