The Black Banana began in 1971 as "La Banane Noire," an ice cream parlor and restaurant located at 534 South 4th Street, Philadelphia. [1]In the late 1970s, it moved to 3rd and Race Street and became a members-only club, known as "The Crusaders Community Club".

[4] Between 1940 and 1957, the club's building at 1517 Girard Avenue, Philadelphia, PA, was a center for social and cultural life. Because African-Americans were barred from many clubs and restaurants, the Pyramid Club had its own bar and restaurant.

Malcolm X Park (formerly named Black Oak Park) is an urban park in West Philadelphia named in honor of Malcolm X. It is a six-acre park located around 51st Street and Pine Street. [1] The park is known for its jazz festival during the summer. [2] Black Oak Park was founded in 1903 and fully developed by 1910.
The festival is named after Marcus Garvey's shipping line, the Black Star Line. [3] It was founded in 2012 by Maori Karmael Holmes , with the first BlackStar Film Festival initially conceived as a one-day "microfestival" that, due to the large number of submissions, ultimately turned into a four-day international event.
